MDF is a type of hardboard, which is a wood based composite material that draws on the usage of wood fibres, rather than particles or veneers to produce board or sheet products. It is typically made as a board type product, though it's use in mouldings and increasing use as a structural product will see beam type products proliferate.
It is dense, flat, stiff, has no knots and is easily machined. Because it is made up of fine particles it does not have an easily recognisable surface grain. MDF can be painted to produce a smooth quality surface. Because MDF has no grain it can be cut, drilled, machined and filed without damaging the surface. MDF may be dowelled together and traditional woodwork joints may even be cut. MDF may be glued together with PVA wood glue. Oil, water-based paints and varnishes may be used on MDF. Veneers and laminates may also be used to finish MDF. Its advantages also include high strengths (MOR of 80 MPa and MOE of 3000 MPa), ease of machining, good weathering properties, and the ability to be made from a wide variety of fibrous products
It is replacing the use of particleboard in uses such as furniture manufacture, cabinet making, joinery, craft work, wall-panels and flooring.
